Welcome to the second issue of The Week In Words.
Nevada commission has approved boxing to restart on June 9 and June 11 for Top Rank cards behind close doors. Shakur Stevenson and Felix Caraballo will be headlining at the MGM Grand in Vegas. There are strict rules in place, such as they will be staying on assigned floor in a hotel for fight week, they will train the Top Rank gym and they will eat at a restaurant chosen by Top Rank. Bob Arum confirmed there will be 5 fights on June 9th. Golden boy are expected to hold a card on July 4th headlined by Ryan Garcia (opponent TBC) and Eddie Hearn will be holding boxing at the Matchroom HQ from July 15th.
"Whoever they want me to fight, I’m taking them all.” said Crawford when asked ‘who does he want to fight.’ “I don’t hand-pick them; I just fight them.”“You’re so cocky because that level of confidence when you talk about instincts, usually a fighter on top, will survey the landscape and say, ‘That guy is different. I’m going to have to prove it against that guy,'” said Max Kellerman. “You don’t see anyone out there like that on your own level?” Max said. “I read a quote recently where you said you’d proven more than like in the PBC,” said Kellerman to Crawford. “In various other weight classes but at 147 pounds because they get to fight each other, we’ve seen Spence, and we’ve seen [Shawn] Porter. “We thought Spence would beat Porter up in a good fight, but it didn’t happen that way. Like until you fight the guys, we don’t know. We just suspect. So what does it mean to you to not have those fights available yet at 47?” Whoever he faces expect fireworks, Crawford will look to make a statement, as will his opponent.
Eddie Hearn has confirmed that he wants to schedule a fight between Devin Haney and Luke Campbell if the Garcia fight falls through. Hearn has said that Campbell has mixed at a much higher level than Haney if you want to compare their resumes. Campbell is certainly a bigger puncher however youth on his side a win will catapult Haney in the division and with Campbell will be looking to come off back to back losses so this makes a great fight.
Billy Joe Saunders says Canelo is “in his world” if they fight behind close doors - that is of course if Canelo agrees to the fight. BJS has hinted he may have to stop him as he doesn’t want the decision to be left to the judges. Eddie Hearn wants to make the fight and he has said it is now his job to make the fight happen. Billy Joe has also said he wants to fight Callum Smith as he has what Billy Joe wants and vice versa. If neither of these fights can be made he wants Andrade, he said “he has a big mouth and I’ll be very confident of stopping him because of his style” but Smith Canelo are the fights he wants.
Tyson Fury has said he’s not overlooking Wilder for their trilogy fight later this year, he said he hasn’t thought too much about the AJ fight in 2021 but if he was to box him, there will be 2 fights (at least). Speaking about offering Wilder step aside money, Tyson Fury said he wouldn’t pay $10,000 to step aside, he would rather go in and knock him out, again. When I asked about boxing behind close doors Fury said he doesn’t think he could get motivated it and said it would be like working in the gym. Fury also said he wants to break all records and become the highest-paid boxer in history and he believes with his management team, his promoter and everyone else in between that this could be a reality. Fury has said he needs to fight Wilder, AJ, Whyte, Joe Joyce, Daniel Dubois, Chisora, Usyk and Tony Yoka.
