The Week In Words #4

Welcome to the fourth addition of the Week In Words brought to you by Behemoth Boxing.

This week, major boxing was back in action in the USA with heavyweight prospect Jared Anderson with an impressive TKO and Shakur Stevenson stopping Caraballo in the 6th.

Charles Martin wants to replace AJ if he cannot box against Pulev later this year, with AJ suffering a knee injury in training it looks like his Pulev fight is up in the air. Martin was iced by AJ 4 years ago and it will be difficult for him and a potential defiant one should he not come out on top - realistically, where would he go from there? He’d be another has been, another Kevin Johnson. It will be interesting to see if the IBF would strip AJ of his title which in fairness would be disappointing because all the fans want at this moment in time is an undisputed fight. The WBO also think that Usyk should fight Joshua before Tyson Fury and there are rumours that they may strip the WBO belt if he faces Fury first. This will be devastating for the boxing community so let’s hope common sense prevails. Personally I would like to see Usyk box a few gate keepers in the heavyweight division before taking a shot at AJ, however time is not on his side. In an ideal world I think that the Chisora fight great fight for both parties, so let’s hope that still goes ahead post lockdown.

Tyson Fury says that Deontay Wilder knocks out AJ every time. It has been confirmed that he will not be fighting Dillian Whyte until after the two fight deal with Anthony Joshua, so it seems that The Body Snatcher will have to wait another 12 months (at least) for a title shot. If Fury beats Wilder and beats AJ twice, perhaps we could be looking at Whyte vs. Wilder. Fury vs Whyte, AJ vs Wilder and even a fight to settle the scores, with AJ vs Whyte - there’s an interesting 24 months ahead for the heavyweight division. If AJ loses against Fury, Hearn will have to do some poaching as the British public will need a superstar to be at your big draw for Matchroom. Would Daniel Dubois or even Tyson Fury join Matchroom? You know what they say, Earn With Hearn.

Andre Ward has criticised Tyson Fury for overlooking Deontay Wilder and announcing is two fight deal with Anthony Joshua. You could say the same about AJ and Ruiz last year and look what happened. Tim Bradley also agrees with Andre Ward, stating you should focus on one fight at a time and to never count your eggs before they actually hatch. This being said it could even be mind games by The Gypsy King trying to mentally crush Wilder , or it’s a case of looking forward to the next fight if Wilder is not fit post bicep surgery. British Whyte fans will be asking what does this mean for their beloved Dillian,  after waiting almost 2 years for the WBC mandatory it looks like he will not be boxing for the title until 2021. Which is disappointing however it means we are guaranteed a third all British undisputed heavyweight championship fight in a row –that’s history.

In other news, Billy Joe Saunders has hinted at retirement after posting on social media thanking boxing - let’s hope this is just a play, so we can either have BJS vs. Canelo or Smith in 2020/2021!  Oleksandr Gvozdyk  has officially retired so he can focus on his business interests. Rumours that he’s never been the same since his viciously stopped Adonis “Superman” Stevenson and the stoppage loss against Beterbiev, he has decided to call it a day. He had a great career and we wish him all the best in his future endeavours!

As always, thank you for reading our blog.

Stay safe,
